Why One of King Charles’ Royal Residences Is Closing Temporarily

One of King Charles III’s summer home is taking a royal break from the public eye.

Balmoral Castle, the family’s estate in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, announced a temporary closure due to a strong summer storm affecting the United Kingdom.

“Balmoral will be closed to the public today, Monday 4th August, due to Storm Floris,” the estate said in a statement posted to Instagram August 4. “Please do not travel to the Estate. We will be issuing refunds for tickets to visit today.”

The post added, “Stay safe everyone.”

Indeed, the storm’s conditions are unusually intense for the summer season, with the U.K.’s Meteorological Office issuing an amber and yellow wind warning in Scotland, per The Associated Press

Balmoral’s unexpected closure comes just one day after the residence—which the royal family is known to stay at towards the end of each summer—announced that it is set to close to the public for the season on August 10.

The announcement noted that Balmoral is “the Highland home of the Royal Family, offering a unique glimpse into regal heritage and the enduring legacy of the monarchy.”
