Taylor Swift Gave Your Tired Office Uniform a Trendy Denim Update

Taylor Swift is no stranger to denim with a bit of flair. She’s done jeans with bedazzled butterfly cut-outs while out to dinner on Cornelia Street and wore black jeans with slits and rhinestone embellishments to the Super Bowl. So it makes sense that Swift would eventually try out the trend that’s been slowly making its way into every denim brand over the past few years: crossovers.

Basically, it’s where the fly buttons at like…an angle? At first it looks…wrong? As if you’re folding one side of the waist too far over to the other side? But it’s a playful way to create something just a little unexpected with one of the most classic and recognizable pieces of clothing—the American blue jean—and you can find a version of the style everywhere from The Gap to Levi’s.

Swift is wearing hers in the short video promotion for the latest vinyl variant of her upcoming album, The Life of a Showgirl, the sparkly pink edition exclusive to Target. In the clip, she directs the showgirl version of herself on a soundstage. Showgirl Taylor is in a costume, while Director Swift is in a black jacket and the aforementioned jeans. Neither version is wearing her engagement ring because either this was shot pre-proposal or that’s just not what this is about. (Watch the Reel here.)

In the video, Taylor Swift talks to herself through a megaphone, and she’s got some pretty pointed feedback for herself. “It’s giving no, girl, not showgirl,” she says, adding to someone off-camera, “She’s got cat hair all over her.” Later, she asks for “elegance, charm…not that” as the showgirl version of herself trips over her heels and cans of paint.

We haven’t heard any of TLoaS yet (previous clips have had backing music from other Swift songs, and this clip has nonspecific jazz), but we do know the track list…
